Each New Year brings us the hope of change, of happiness, of good fortune and of good health, but for many of us it also brings a bit of a headache. Since we have some time before New Year’s Eve we have some pre-celebrating and post-celebrating ideas for remedying the “New Year’s Flu”.

Pre-Celebration Tips

The first piece of advice is obvious; don’t drink too much, but if you are going to and you have a designated driver or Uber on speed dial then these tips should help.

  • Eat before you go out. It is the big day, you are excited and rushing to get ready and think that skipping dinner or lunch before going out is a good idea. Nope, you want to eat and you want to eat badly (keep the diet food for the weeks and days before). Choose food with carbohydrates like pizza or pasta. These will absorb the alcohol and make the next day more enjoyable. If you don’t want a burger and fries you can try healthy options like oil fish such as salmon.

  • Hydrate and restore electrolytes. It isn’t ONLY dehydration that brings on that dreaded headache, alcohol destroys essential B vitamins. Before imbibing load up on Vitamin B, opt for B Complex, B6 or B12 or eat natural sources such as liver (yuck), red meats and milk and cheese.

  • Drink Olive Oil before you go out. It will help your body absorb the alcohol. So before you do your favorite shot, take a shot of Olive Oil (a tablespoon is enough).

    Celebration Ideas

Follow these tips while you are out celebrating will help lessen the hangover the next day.

    • Alternate a non-alcoholic drink in between other drinks. Water is a good choice and so aren’t sports drinks like Gatorade that replaces both fluids and electrolytes. We aren’t talking Red Bull and Vodka here!

    • Eat while you are drinking. Ask for bread or other food with carbs and proteins. Worry about the diet in the New Year.

    • Sip Sparingly. New Year’s calls for champagne and champagne often leads to hangovers, so skip the champagne during the evening, instead have a toast at the stroke of midnight.

    • Drink Clear Spirits. Stick with clear liquor like vodka and gin and mix them with juices over soda mixes.

    • Skip the cigarettes! While many of us don’t smoke on a regular basis, many of us will have a few smokes when drinking alcohol. Don’t do it; for the obvious reasons, but it also adds to the hangover in the morning.

      Post-Celebration Ideas

Alright so you didn’t heed our advice and now you are looking for advice to cure that dreaded headache. We won’t say I told you so, instead here are some tips.

      • Drink Apple Cider (like Braggs) or Pickle Juice. Yeah, we know the last thing you want to do is drink anything else, but you can stay in bed and suffer or you can try this.

        • Drink ¼ cup of pickle juice before going to bed or when you first get up. The salt and vinegar in the pickle juice will get your body moving to restore water and electrolytes.

        • A teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar will help balance pH levels and increase potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron.

        • Eat eggs the next day. Skip the eggs benedict and instead opt for a poached egg or plain omelet. Skip the bacon and sausage or biscuits and gravy.

        • Drink Sprite, seltzer or ginger ale. They will be easy on your stomach and will help rehydrate.

        • Head on down to your local Chinese restaurant or Asian store. Pick up some Chinese Black tea or the Chinese version of Sprite which will help speed up your body’s metabolism to rid itself of the harmful chemicals produced by alcohol consumption. Herbal tea does the opposite and slows down your metabolism meaning your hangover lasts longer.

        • Get up and exercise. You are probably cursing right now, thinking there is no way you can get up and run, but getting up and moving will get the blood flowing and sweating will help rid your body of the toxins from the night before. One of the best hangover exercises is Yoga with twisting and bending of your back which will help wring out the toxic build up in your spine.

          Happy New Year!
