A gym membership is a commitment in both time and money, but 50% of those who sign up for a year’s membership don’t last a full year (5 months is the average) and those who do, don’t go on a regular basis. Don’t be part of this statistic; make an informed decision when choosing a gym by following these guidelines.

  1. Location and Times – a gym has to be convenient or you will be one of those who drop their membership or go very rarely. The best way to determine the best location is to look for gyms as part of your daily routine. Is there one near your work or home that you drive by every day? Is there one near your day care or school? If you see the gym on your way home or to/from your daily routine you are more than likely to actually go to the gym.

  2. Culture – not all gyms are alike, be sure you do your research. Ask around, check out reviews and ask for a tour or a free day. If you are the baggy sweats and ripped t-shirt type of exerciser and you see people in matching spandex and all about the look, then you probably won’t feel comfortable. If you don’t feel comfortable exercising around people of the opposite sex, then choose a gym that caters to your gender.

  3. Equipment & Facilities – be certain that the equipment is in good working condition and that there is enough equipment for the membership. Pay close attention the equipment you are most interested in using, if there are only a few of these, then choose another gym.

  4. Day Care – if you are a parent and day care is one barrier from keeping up your exercise routine, then find a gym that is either near your day care or has an in-house day care.

  5. Classes – lots of gyms offer different classes, but are you interested in these (really interested) and are they being offered when you can take advantage of them. If not, keep on shopping.

  6. Price isn’t Everything – statistics show that price is the number one factor in choosing a gym, it shouldn’t be. Pay very close attention to the fine print on gym memberships and paying a few more dollars every month for a gym you will actually go to has more value than paying less to a gym that you won’t visit.

Follow these tips and you will be on your way to a long and healthy relationship with your gym.
