It is hard to believe that fall is right around the corner, unless of course you have gone into a department or drug store where they already have Halloween and Fall items out among the Back to School Items. Even if you live in a warm climate and it isn’t time to trade in your summer clothes for warmer clothes, this is a great time to take stock and to get your closets organized.

Here are some tips.

  • If your closet is bursting at the seams and you just can’t part with items you can integrate storage into another room with clothing racks, over the door storage hooks and storage elements that act as furniture.

  • Remove all of the items from your closet. Place them into piles (wear all the time, wear on special occasions, never wear or shouldn’t wear).

  • Now that you have them in these piles, next organize them by type: hanger, hooks, folded, odds and ends.

  • Take stock of your storage accessories.

    1. Get rid of broken or mix matched hangers.

    2. Purchase storage bins, cubbies or shelf dividers to keep folded clothes neat.

    3. Hang hooks from the back of the closet or use removable hooks to hang belts, pocket books, or jewelry.

    4. Invest in shoe racks, the floor type are a good option, but they also sell ones that hang on the back of doors.

    5. Before you place your items back in, think about how often you wear or use these items. If it is a special occasion dress or suit, this should go toward the back of your closet. Those items that you use daily should be upfront and/or at eye level. The same goes with shoes or seasonal items. Put those special shoes in a box in the back corner or those snow boots and gloves you only use a few times a year; they could go on a top hard to reach shelf or in a far corner. A good general rule is most used items should be up front and at eye level; less used items should be stored below and least used items stored up high.

    6. You can add additional storage space by purchasing inexpensive two tiered storage units and placing them on the top shelf or using a tension rod to hang additional items.

    7. Are If your closet is bursting at the seams and you just can’t part with items you can integrate storage into another room with clothing racks, over the door storage hooks and storage elements that act as furniture. For example, suit cases placed on their side make great end tables or add a skirt to a desk or table and store items

These great tips will help you keep your home clean and ready for the new season and are great whether you live in your own home or rent an apartment in Valley Village, CA.
