Our mouths water when we think of a juicy grilled steak with the perfect grill marks, done to the right temperature and served with a delicious salad and potato. The ideal grilled steak can be allusive unless you follow these tips for grilling the perfect steak.

Good Quality Steaks

The most tender and flavorful steaks are Prime grade; you might find them at a local butcher or specialty store, but if you can’t, the next best quality is Choice. Select Choice grade filets, rib eyes and porterhouse steaks with marbling.

Room Temperature

Most chefs recommend taking the steak out before putting it on the grill for an hour. Cooking your steak at a cold temperature will cause the outside to burn while the inside is still heating up.

Oil the Meat

The best way to make sure your steak doesn’t stick is to oil the steak before placing on the grill.

Get the Grill Hot

Preheat your grill on high. If you can place your hand above the grill and leave it there for more than 2 seconds, it probably isn’t hot enough. Experts say not to trust the thermometer that comes as part of the grill, but instead purchase an outdoor grill thermometer. You want the grill hot enough to hear a sizzle when the steak hits the grill. That high heat will give your steak a perfect crust.

Check the Temperature

We know you hear chefs say to use the palm of your hand trick and it will get you close, but a perfect steak is the result of a perfect temperature in the middle of the steak; 125 degrees for rare, 130 to 135 for medium rare and well-done is 155 degrees. A good quality meat thermometer helps you cook the perfect steak every time.

Extra Temp Tip: If your steak is around 2 inches thick, it will continue to rise in temperature even after it is off the grill. A good rule of thumb is to pull it off five degrees before the target temperature.

Let it Rest

Never cut into a steak right from the grill! It may be hard to resist, but let it rest for about 8 minutes in a foil tent.

Top it Off

Steak house top their steak off with a good quality butter or sauce for extra richness.

By following these tips, you and your steaks will be the envy of your Riverside Villa apartments.
