Catalina Island is a great way to spend Father’s Day; only 26 miles off the coast of LA, when you visit this island you will be transformed to an island paradise that seems much further away.
Most visitors reach the island by ferry, some more adventurous sail or fly by helicopter. Catalina Express offers ferry services each day from Newport Beach, Dana Point, Long Beach or San Pedro, CA. There are two sides of the island (and both quite different), the most popular and accessible is Avalon.
Upon arrival you will feel transported to San Tropez as the island appears to rise from the ocean. The harbor is filled with boats of all sizes, but your eyes will be drawn to the large yachts that call Catalina home or visit from around the world. From the wharf you will take in the smells of the fish caught daily and hear the sounds of music.
Downtown Avalon is just a short walk from the port and has a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. You can also walk on the wharf or enjoy the small beach. The best way to get around for a day trip is to rent a golf cart.
Once you have rented your golf cart, you can take a ride around the island by heading in land. Visit Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden, visit Descanso Beach Club where you can enjoy lunch with a view, rent a cabana or for the more adventurous the Zip-Line Eco Tour.
Catalina also has two golf courses, an 18-hole course and a miniature golf that is perfect for the entire family.
Rent snorkeling equipment or a kayak and explore the beautiful clear waters of Catalina. You can see turtles, fish, coral and more.
If you are staying more than a day there are some great hotels and a number of tours that allow you to explore Catalina at night.
Catalina also offers hiking, camping and fishing. What a great way to spend Father’s Day and a quick ferry trip from one of the ports near your apartment in Valley Village.
PS – Catalina Express offers a free ride on your birthday and many of the shops and restaurants have birthday offers as well.
